About Plate Heat Exchangers
Plate heat exchangers are used to transfer heat between two media, separated by corrugated plates. These exchangers consist of various heat transfer plates, sealed by gaskets, brazed, or welded together.
The plates are arranged in a way that forms flow channels for the hot and cold media, allowing them to flow alternately. This setup facilitates the transfer of thermal energy from one medium to the other, ensuring the two media remain separated to prevent mixing. When the media flow in opposite directions, it’s known as the countercurrent principle; if they flow in the same direction, it’s parallel flow. Some fully-welded models use the cross-flow principle. All variants feature corrugated plates that create a highly turbulent flow.

Single Shell & Tube
In contrast to standard single-wall shell & tube heat exchangers, double-tube safety models feature a dual-wall design where each tube consists of inner and outer layers, and two tube sheets at either end. In the event of damage to a tube wall, any leaked product flows through designated leakage channels between the double tubes into a collection space, triggering an alarm in the leak detection system. Crucially, the undamaged second tube wall ensures that the media remain separate, allowing the plant operator to continue operating the heat exchanger until scheduled maintenance. This approach helps prevent costly unplanned downtime and protects against contamination of processes and equipment.
